Introduction to the Law of Balance

As you make this one thousand day, thirty-six month, Journey around the Wisdom Wheel you will receive 36 letters like this, one on each full moon.  They provide the overview of the Law to be studied during that month.  Your regular email service contains the Daily Guidance reminders about the various aspects of each Law, as well as the attachment, with your blank Journal page (dated & formatted), plus a sample page from the Journal of Cynthia Davidson who has made the same Journey.  The daily email service is designed to help you keep on track, step by step, day by day as you progress round the Wheel.

You may want to purchase your own small set of 36 stones to work with while making this Journey.  Whether you use them alone, or join a Wisdom Wheel study group, make the effort to lay out your personal Wheel, or sit round it with others, at least twice a month.  This will visually reinforce what you’re learning.  (Most people do this at full moon and new moon times.)  Spend a few hours with others regularly to discuss and share what you’re learning as you focus on each Law.  Contact us if you would like to establish and facilitate a Wisdom Wheel study group in your home, church, school or workplace. (We offer a certification process, plus support and class materials.)

Balance is the central Law on the Wisdom Wheel for many reasons.  During the coming month you will have an opportunity to look at Balance from all sides of the Wheel. This will improve your understanding of the inter-relationships between the mental, emotional, physical and spiritural aspects of Balance.

Many people consider Balance a matter of life and death.  It certainly affects health and happiness.  You will learn how to (re)evaluate your own sense of Balance, in all four quadrants, and what you might do to improve your Balance with others, at work or in your family.  Balance is crucial to the sustainability of individuals as well as systems and organizations.

A friend of mine, David Gaster, died of brain cancer at age 46.  He wrote about Balance before he died and linked it to quality, in life as well as business.  From his early days as a British expatriate bush pilot in Africa , through his careers as a management consultant for European and American companies , he was always interested in vision; what we see and how we see it.

          “The key issue is balance… Quality…comes from balance, physically, mentally and emotionally. It may be immensely rewarding to have built a major organization, but if that is accomplished through the sacrifice of personal health or losing one’s family, then what kind of reward is it? And what example does it set for others?  Sacrifices have to be made, but the sacrifice of balance is never appropriate… balance preserves the identity, the spirit and the heart (of the person and) the enterprise which is the core ability of living towards the vision.  There have been far too many examples of unbalanced vision already.”  from New Traditions in Business David’s chapter “A Framework for Visionary Leadership”

Use the Wheel to find your Balance, over and over again.  Balance is a dynamic Process, not a one time event. The Wheel is a good tool for centering and grounding work.  When you feel scattered, overly emotional, or stuck in your head too much, spend some time at the Wheel.  Sit in the quadrant that represents what you have too much of and face the other side of the Wheel.  What you need, your ‘medicine,’ will be across from you, directly opposite on the Wheel.  On this Journey you will learn how to do this for others as well as yourself. For example, body balances mind, spirit balances heart.  Use the holistic framework of the Wisdom Wheel to restore your Balance and to incorporate other advice, opinions or treatments.

 “Finding the center of strength within ourselves is, in the long run, the best contribution we can make to our fellow men,” said Rollo May.  You will read about many other resources for each Law in the months ahead. May’s books include;

One last thing – please share your experiences on this Journey.  Send us a few lines each week, about what you’re learning, as you pass through each quadrant.  What you learn can encourage and enlighten others.  We hope you enjoy this Journey as you practice living by the Laws of the universe.
