Traveling the Wheel can increase your conscious Awareness of all the energies, alternatives and archetypes available in the universe, but 'who' is aware? As we take up the Law of the Self this month you will have time to consider your mental self, emotional self, physical self and spiritual self. All these selves are traveling the Wheel of Life. There is a large Self that emcompasses all the other smaller selves and this month is about distinguishing these differences. The 'masks' we wear (while our spirits inhabit physical bodies) include ethnicity, nationality, occupation and social roles: child, adolescent, young adult, spouse, parent, wage-earner, homeowner but we are more than just these layers and labels.
As you begin your first week with the mental self, consider your 'self concepts.' They can be self-limiting or limitless, depending on how you relate to your 'masks" and your options. It's worth noting that the most highly paid people in the United States are actors. They do 'make believe' for a living, constantly shifting their shapes, to become different characters. While they entertain us they are making us believe and we value that enough to make them very rich. Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise make over $20 million for roughly six weeks work on each movie. How much 'make believe' do you have in your life? Shamans are the ancient shapeshifters. They learned how to free their energy so they could take on appropriate masks in healing situations.
While circling the Wheel this time around, free your 'self' to try on different guises like the costumes that they are. Use the Four Directions to improvise as you try on the Artist, Fool, Hero, King or Queen and so on.
Warrior in the East during the first week - the energy of the fighting self
Teacher in the South during the second week
Healer in the West during the third week
Visionary in the North during the final week
Your Journey around the Wheel of Life brings you into contact with many opportunities. Move beyond the circumstances of your birth. The preferences and prejudices we inherit can help or hinder us as we reach for our Pure Potential, Power and Higher Purpose. Prejudice weakens our 'medicine' and cramps our spiritual growth, so purify your self of negative stereotypes.
You can make the most progress, in the shortest amount of time, by embracing who (and what) you have previously disdained... Jelahuddin Rumi wrote over 800 years ago, 'Be source, not result.'
There are many books about the Self, including Stuart Wilde's Infinite Self-, Jean Houston's The Possible Human- and Christopher Lasch's The Minimal Self- to name a few. There are also poems and short stories to explore on this subject. The exuberant Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko's 'I Would Like' poem is about embracing many possible selves. This enthusiasm, to see all and be all, is what feeds the soul of an Artist and the creative side in each of us.
Take some time to sit quietly in the East and face the West today as you begin to study this Law. Ask for help to become wiser about the Self this month. Declare your intention aloud. If you have a personal set of Wisdom Wheel stones, lay them out from this Direction. You can also visit the website and see a 'virtual' set of stones, laid out in accordance with each phase of the moon.
You have a three day 'window' each month to catch the culminating wave of full moon energy; on the day of the full moon, the day before it or the day after. Re-establish your rhythm with Nature as you study these Natural/Universal/Spiritual Laws. This can greatly enhance your effectiveness. Going against the flow tires us out prematurely and works against our efforts with Self and every one else. The Wheel will teach you how to 'go with the flow.' Drop us a line via email and let us know how you're doing.
Best wishes, Malcolm & Cynthia Davidson
