Welcome to the Wisdom Wheel Law of Beauty # 13

There is so much Beauty in this world. If you can not see it, your vision has clouded over. Silence the Judge and the Critic within and you will see Beauty abundantly, in yourself as well as others.

Welcome to the 13^th Law of Beauty. This month is also the beginning of your second year on the One Thousand Day Journey round the Wisdom Wheel. Congratulations on your perseverance! By now you have experienced some of the benefits that come from keeping this Commitment. Please send an email to let us know how you’re doing.

This year you’ll study the twelve ‘outer circle’ Laws. They are sometimes called the Birth Laws (or Moonstones) since they represent the twelve months of the (astrological) year. This calendar follows the solar year and the solstices and equinoxes in the ancient system patterned on the movement of the starry constellations of the Sky Wheel. If you haven’t learned to recognize the particular constellation you were born under, get a good map of the night sky and find it.  

By the end of this year, you will know all the Birth Laws, and how the annual Wheel calendar works. Depending on when you began this Journey, you may or may not be, in sequence with the changing seasons of the original entries. (Cynthia’s Journey started in April so springtime subscribers will be closest in sequence.)

Traditionally spring was the time of the New Year and new beginnings. This suited agricultural societies as farmers planted their crops and new growth began again. This morning while standing beside the Beauty stone at the outdoor Wheel, the birds were chirping and chattering round the property and I thought about the Law of Beauty and why it belongs here, on the Eastern side of the Wheel, beside the Law of Right Action. Ideally, Beauty can be an outcome of Right Action – as when we do our best to preserve the natural Beauty of the environment.

For any one born between April 20 and May 21 approximately, this Law has special significance because it is their Birth Law and corresponds to the sign of Taurus the Bull.  

On the Wisdom Wheel Clarity is the Law that balances Beauty. If you’ve lost sight of Beauty try to see more clearly. Use insight, not just eyesight. A beautiful spirit is far more capable of increasing the Beauty in the world than a beautiful face or body is.

The Native American Navaho people have a whole philosophy called the Beauty Way . Their chanters sing many Beauty songs and say ‘May you walk in Beauty’ and ‘May it be done in Beauty’ when they wish someone well. This month try being generous with compliments and encouragement, to others as well as yourself. Sing praise songs and add the word Beauty to your prayers. They say every thing we whisper or sing to the Wind will circle the world and come back to us again, strengthened. Put Beauty out if you want to breathe it back in. The Wind circles this tiny planet forever carrying every word we’ve ever uttered.

 One story keeps coming back to me about this Law, though it happened years ago.  My father had come to visit me in Manhattan where I lived at the time.  The two of us were walking down Park Avenue on a sunny summer day and a black woman was walking ahead of us.  I was admiring her hairdo, an intricate and amazing creation, of tiny braids all done up with golden cords.  Small gold star-shaped pins secured everything to her head in a neat French twist.  I was taking in all these details when my father said, “Damned ugly corn rows!  Why do they do that?” 

     I was so shocked I didn’t say anything but I’ll never forget the distance that registered between the two of us in that moment.  One saw Beauty -in all its gorgeous, regal dignity- but the other was so full of judgement & racism that it could only spew venom and ugliness.  That is not the end of the story.  My father died of lung cancer this Winter.  He slowly suffocated to death, his own polluted lungs denying him the very Air he needed to live after years of smoking, and negativity.  There is a connection here to the Law of Cause & Effect…  You know that Wind, Air, breath and Spirit are represented in the North, where Integrity is on the Wheel.  It is not right to pollute that Wind and Air, with carbon monoxide or curses.  Deep clean breaths and healthy lungs depend upon Right Action.  All of us share that same global Wind and weather system...and the global mind.
